Endeavour Launch Delay

We were planning to watch the launch today, and cheer on the astronauts and SSEP schools.  We were so disappointed to hear about the launch delay, but we know it is better to be safe than sorry.  Fingers crossed for a successful launch on Monday!

Will the SSEP samples that are already on board Endeavour need to be unloaded to make the repair?  Or will they stay put?  Hmmmm…we will need to consider a possible delay when planning for our mission, especially as it would impact living samples.

Hello from Skinner West!

Skinner West School is so proud to be participating in the Student Spaceflight Experiments Program!  This historic program gives our student-scientists the truly once-in-a-lifetime opportunity conduct real research in space.

Who is participating?  We all are!  Students in grades 4 – 8 are taking part in a microgravity experiment design competition.  The winning experiment will go to space on board STS-135, the last scheduled mission of Space Shuttle Atlantis.  Our younger students will take part in a competition to design the winning Mission Patch that will accompany our experiment into space.

We will be using this blog as a way to reach out to the larger community regarding our project.  We will post updates on our progress all the way to the launch, and throughout the STS-135 mission.

In particular, we are hoping to engage Chicago’s large and diverse scientific community in our project by posting student science questions to the blog.  Scientists will be invited to answer the students’ questions in the comments section of each post.

Watch this space for further updates!
