The Effect of Microgravity on Bacterial Reproduction
Grade 9, Ballston Spa High School
Principal Investigator: Troy Mackey
Teacher Facilitator: Mary Lue Stern, Biology Teacher

 Proposal Summary:

What is the effect of microgravity on bacterial reproduction? If Bacillus thuringiensis is exposed to microgravity for ten days, I am proposing that the bacteria will reproduce at a much faster rate than on Earth’s surface under conditions of normal gravity. I am testing this experiment because, if in later years we build a base on the moon and we grow plants Bacillus thuringiensis can kill off any unwanted pest. My background reading has shown that Bacillus thuringiensis can be used as a natural pesticide.

Affect of Penicillin in Microgravity
Grade 11, Ballston Spa High School
Principal Investigator: Denise Croote
Teacher Facilitator: Mary Ellen Kusnierz, Science Teacher

Proposal Summary: Will penicillin be more effective, less effective, or equally effective in killing Pseudomonas Aeruginosa PAO-1 on H7 embryonic mouse stem cells in microgravity?
