Experiment Design Competition and Selection of Flight Experiments: Fall 2019
Flight to ISS: projected launch Spring/Summer 2020, on Space-X-21 (Falcon 9 rocket and Dragon spacecraft); return to Earth at launch+1 month, on SpaceX-21 (see Flight Profile page)

 

The 32 communities profiled below are providing the opportunity for thousands of grade 5-16 students to design and propose real microgravity experiments for flight aboard the International Space Station (ISS) as part of SSEP Mission 14 to ISS – the 16th SSEP flight opportunity.

Each community conducts a local Flight Experiment Design Competition with student teams designing microgravity experiments across multiple disciplines. Each team submits a formal research proposal, vying for an experiment slot reserved just for their community in a real research mini-laboratory scheduled to fly on the International Space Station. The Mission 14 to ISS community leadership project that across the network of 32 communities a minimum of 27,800 students will be fully engaged in experiment design, and a minimum of 3,620 flight experiment proposals from student teams will be received.

Thousands more grade preK-12 students are being given the opportunity to participate in SSEP Mission 14 to ISS community-wide programming, which includes the design of Mission Patches to fly aboard ISS. Through community engagement activities, together with microgravity experiment design, a total of 304 schools in 17 States, 2 Canadian Provinces, and Brazil are taking part in Mission 14 to ISS. Edmonton, Alberta, and Halifax, Nova Scotia, are the two Canadian communities, and Sao Paulo is the community in Brazil. Mission 14 includes five communities in Texas; three in California; and two in Florida, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Oklahoma and Wisconsin. Three communities are focusing on university undergraduates – Stockton University in Galloway, New Jersey, the University of Maryland System, and the University of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

  • third Mission for Sao Paulo, Brazil; Winfield City, Alabama; Corcoran, California; Moreno Valley, California; and iForward – Grantsburg, Wisconsin
  • second Mission for Edmonton, Alberta, Canada; Stamford, Connecticut; Anne Arundel County, Maryland; Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania – University of Pittsburgh; Sumter, South Carolina; and Bellevue, Washington

Mission 14 is made possible in part by a grant from the Center for the Advancement of Science in Space (CASIS) to the National Center for Earth and Space Science Education. CASIS is a National Partner on the Student Spaceflight Experiments Program. For 10 of the 33 communities, Mission 14 is made possible in part by a grant from Subaru of America, also a National Partner on SSEP. For the 2 Canadian communities, Mission 14 is made possible in part by a grant from Magellan Aerospace, a Canadian National Partner on SSEP, which also supported 2 communities in MA and NY where Magellan Aerospace has U.S. facilities.

More generally, Mission 14 to ISS is made possible through the involvement of 99 Local Partner institutions, including school districts, corporate foundations, universities, community foundations, and companies, and which are providing both underwriting and material and human resources. This includes support from 9 NASA Space Grant Consortia at lead universities, including: California Space Grant Consortium at University of California, San Diego; Connecticut Space Grant Consortium at the University of Hartford; Florida Space Grant Consortium at the University of Central Florida; Maryland Space Grant Consortium at Johns Hopkins University; Massachusetts Space Grant Consortium at Massachusetts Institute of Technology; Michigan Space Grant Consortium at the University of Michigan; New York Space Grant Consortium at Cornell University; Texas Space Grant Consortium at University of Texas at Austin; and Wisconsin Space Grant Consortium at Carthage College.

The level of partnership is remarkable, and speaks to what a team of partners at the local, state, and national levels can do together in STEM education.

The Student Spaceflight Experiments Program (SSEP) is a program of the National Center for Earth and Space Science Education (NCESSE) in the U.S., and the Arthur C. Clarke Institute for Space Education internationally. It is enabled through a strategic partnership with DreamUp PBC and NanoRacks LLC, which are working with NASA under a Space Act Agreement as part of the utilization of the International Space Station as a National Laboratory. SSEP is the first pre-college STEM education program that is both a U.S. national initiative and implemented as an on-orbit commercial space venture.
